Date: November 10-12, 2008
Location: Scottsdale, AZ
Credits: 16.75 CME

Core Competencies: PC, MK, ICS, PBL, PR, SBP
Intended Audience: Pathologists, Residents, Pathologist Assistants

The diagnosis, clinical management, and treatment of breast disease present important challenges for today’s pathologist. Adequate evaluation and accurate diagnoses are critical factors in dealing with the field’s unique medical and legal issues. And, as a member of a multidisciplinary team, you are charged with a wide range of practical management issues. This Course will provide strategies for meeting all of these challenges. The distinguished faculty will examine diagnostic criteria for common yet challenging lesions – from noninvasive precursors and in situ disease through microinvasive, invasive, and metastic carcinoma. You’ll benefit from expert guidance for:

  • Dealing with problematic diagnoses, including borderline and low-grade precursor lesions, microinvasion, and lobular and ductal carcinoma in situ
  • Understanding the management implications of recent approaches to the evaluation and diagnosis of breast lesions including columnar cell lesions, papillary lesions, core biopsy pathologic and imaging correlation, sentinel lymph nodes, micrometastases, and cost-effective evaluation
  • eeping pace with new developments, including molecular subclassification of invasive breast cancer, quality assurance guidelines for HER2 testing, and updated prognostic and predictive factors.

Following this course, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate and assess the responsibility of pathology in a multidisciplinary setting that includes breast imaging, surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology.
  • Identify common entities and design an approach to the differential diagnosis of common and uncommon lesions initially evaluated on core biopsy.
  • Discuss and comprehend the emerging importance of prognostic and predictive factors in the classification of breast cancer and assess their impact on clinical management of patients undergoing breast-conserving surgery.
