The following list contains details regarding each session offered this year:
| The Power of Peripheral Blood Smears: Apparent Diagnostic Clues (Part 1) Gene L Gulati, PhD, SH(ASCP)DLM |
Learn how to investigate the underlying cause of a patient's anemia, based on peripheral blood smear review, including how peripheral blood smear review gives clues/findings associated with a variety of benign and malignant hematologic conditions. | Wednesday October 19 10 – 10:50AM PT |

| The Power of Peripheral Blood Smears: Apparent Diagnostic Clues (Part 2) Gene L Gulati, PhD, SH(ASCP)DLM |

| Coagulation Laboratory: Methods, Standards and Cost Effective Testing (Part 1) Donna Castellone, MS, MT(ASCP)SH |
Experience a case study approach to examine issues that impact coagulation results: sources of errors, methods of standardization, and new and cost effective testing. Coagulation testing is complex and there can be a disconnect in what the clinician expects to come forth from the laboratory and what can actually be provided by the laboratory. | Thursday October 20 10 – 10:50AM PT |

| Infections without Borders Jeannette Guarner, MD, FASCP |
This session will use case presentations to discuss the epidemiologic, pathologic and microbiologic aspects of anthrax, SARS coronavirus, malaria, cholera, plague, mycobacteria, 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, and dengue/yellow fever. Because of public health concerns, encountering cases of these diseases triggers a series of system-wide responses for controlling outbreaks, not only those at the hospital level, but also at the state and country level. Participants will be able to recognize these diseases and gain skills to consult with the appropriate public health entities. They will also be able to assess if their area/hospital preparedness plan includes actions for these infectious agents. | Thursday October 20 11 – 11:50AM PT |

| Making the Change from Lab Mentality to Customer Service Mentality (Part 1) Susan R. Besaw, MBA, MASCP, SCT(ASCP) |
When interacting with "customers" are you and your staff effective laboratory spokespersons? Do you and your staff know the customer service rules, values and actions that will pay big dividends when interacting with patients and each other? "People helping people" is the essence of health care and the basis of this session. Participants will discover steps and skills for reducing impatience and diffusing unexpected anger. Additionally, they will be able to recruit the best team with techniques and strategies that reveal the true customer service attitudes of potential new hires. Find out how to create and reinforce a customer service focused culture within your practice. | Friday October 21 9 – 9:50AM PT |
