First Annual Barbara M. Castleberry Lecture for Laboratory Professionals at 2011 ASCP Annual Meeting!
In recognition of her contributions to laboratory medicine and for her efforts in promoting and exemplifying the highest qualities of a laboratory professional, ASCP has established the annual Barbara M. Castleberry Lecture, which will be presented at the national ASCP annual meeting every year to recognize an individual whose career mirrors the achievements of Barbara M. Castleberry, PhD, MT(ASCP). The inaugural Barbara M. Castleberry Lecture will take place at the 2011 ASCP Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 2:00pm in Las Vegas.
Barbara M. Castleberry herself will deliver this historic first lecture, entitled "Making the Case for a Laboratory Medicine Career". She will provide her perspectives on using the lessons of the past to face the challenges of the future. A pioneer of modern laboratory medicine and former ASCP Vice President of the Board of Registry (now the ASCP Board of Certification), Dr. Castleberry will describe her professional and personal evolution throughout her 40-year career as a bench technologist, educator, and administrator and she will share the principles, goals, and beliefs that have guided her throughout her illustrious career.
As vice president for the ASCP Board of Registry, Dr. Castleberry converted the BOR from a norm-referenced to a computer adaptive testing environment and launched a number of new examinations during her tenure. Her name appears on more professional certification documents than that of any other individual.
Dr. Castleberry has been a first-line medical technologist, educator, academician, scholar, mentor, and administrator. She has been a tour de force in establishing the 'benchmarks' that define quality and competency for laboratory professionals. Annual Meeting guests are encouraged to make this engaging lecture a "must-attend" part of their Annual Meeting experience.
